String Curtains, The Modern Take on Home Interior

A versatile choice of soft furnishing, string curtains can bring intrigue and a sense of relaxation to an interior. They can be used as a door curtain, cupboard curtain, room divider, or as an extravagant and luxurious statement interior piece.

Helping to maintain privacy, string curtains can evoke a feeling of exclusivity while their fluid form transfers subtle shadows and shapes through with elegance.

What are String Curtains?

Made up of hundreds of individual strings, string curtains are usually made with cotton or polyester and tend to come with a slot top heading to maintain their shape.

String curtains are commonly used in the high-end hospitality sector such as in restaurants or events as they are a quick design solution that can add visual depth to instantly transform any space.

Holding such high aesthetical impact, string curtains are becoming more common in home interior as they can be used in a variety of different ways and they can be easily trimmed to any desired length.

How to Use String Curtains – Doorway

Hung on the top of a door frame, string curtains can reserve privacy by creating the illusion of a divided space which is a great option for separating out various areas in the home such as living room from kitchen or conservatory from the dining room.

Using string curtains as a divider, a nice level of light can be passed through without being obstructed by a door. This is especially important for smaller homes as it can create spaciousness and an airy space.

Studio Flats as a Room Divider

The layout of a studio flat can sometimes feel claustrophobic as everything can be seen at first glance. Combining sleeping, living, and the cooking area into one space could create an unbalanced lifestyle as it is easy to mix up living patterns.

By using string curtains as a divider to create the illusion of rooms, the open plan space can be enhanced and actually seem bigger as there are clear living sections instead of just one big room.

We recommend placing string curtains around the bed area, not only can this separation be beneficial for resting through a balanced lifestyle, they can also add a dose of luxuriousness and relaxation to an interior.

How to Wash String Curtains

We recommend string curtains to be hand washed as this will prevent the strings from being tangled.
To wash the string curtains, place them in a large tub filled with warm water and add some washing powder or mild detergent. You can either soak the curtains or if you prefer to give them a good clean, you can grab each section of the strings and do a waving motion in the warm water so that the accumulated dust can detach from the fibres and solve.

Then, drain the soapy water and fill the tub with just water. Place the string curtains in the tub again to wash off the soap. This ensures the strings are gently washed without the risk of fraying.

Once cleaned, use a microfibre cloth or a towel to softly press onto the curtains to absorb the wetness.

Make sure to remove any knots that may have formed during the washing process and hang them up straight. If your string curtains are used in a doorway or in a location where they must be pushed aside for access, refrain from the temptation of drying your curtains in their original location for convenience as the interaction between movement and damp strings would mean your string curtains wouldn’t dry straight. Place a mat underneath the string curtains for the drying process as water will drip down onto the floor.

In the event that your string curtains aren’t as straight as you’d like them to be, you can lie a towel flat and iron the strings at the lowest temperature.

How to Cut String Curtains

To adjust the length of your string curtains, they should be hung for at least a day to ensure they are completely straight without any creases or folds from being in the packaging.

Use a sharp pair of scissors to cut across and voila! We recommend using a ruler or a straight paper template to ensure the curtains are cut evenly.
