How To Choose The Right Curtain Lining For Your Windows?

Lining not only provides functional benefits for your windows but it can also add fullness to your curtains to help them hang better.

With an extra layer of protection, your curtains will last longer and help prevent colours from fading to maintain a clean, crisp look as the lining can protect the fabric from dust and direct sunlight.

Depending on the type of lining, it can provide different levels and types of insulation.

Standard Lining – Polycotton

Polycotton is a blend of cotton and polyester. This material is produced in a way that brings out the best of both fibres.

Cotton is more resistant to heat compared with man-made fibres, which is an important factor for durability as direct sunlight can damage the fabric. As it is a natural material, it allows air to pass through, therefore curtains made from 100% cotton are suited for warmer weather, or kitchens so that the curtains do not absorb cooking smells too much.

Although cotton is a go-to material for all-round benefits, pure cotton can wrinkle easily and may shrink after being washed. If untreated for fire retardancy, cotton can burn away easily while polyester would just melt.

Polyester is a synthetic fibre that is extremely durable; resistant to mildew; excellent at retaining their colour and they hold their shape well which means it doesn’t wrinkle easily. The downside of polyester is that stains can be difficult to remove.

Bringing together the benefits of both materials, polycotton is a strong material that is less prone to wrinkles and can insulate well. This type of lining is perfect for any windows as it can meet most needs.

Blackout and Dim Out Lining

With an added layer of extra coating, blackout lining can block out the sunlight. It is commonly used in bedrooms so you are not disturbed by the sunlight. In comparison with the standard lining, the blackout lining is made from a thicker material, which means they can help with thermal insulation and noise reduction.

Blackout and dim-out curtains have differing properties and advantages. Dim-out allows for most of the light in the room to be blocked, as opposed to the complete block of a blackout curtain.

Some benefits of the Blackout lining include:

• Ultimate control over the light in a room.
• Reduce the level of street noise entering the room – perfect for helping your children sleep.
• Complete privacy.
• Keep in heat during the winter months.
• Keep out heat during the summer months.
• Uninterrupted sleep – brilliant for night shift workers.
• Protection of furniture and carpet from the fading effects of the sun.

Thermal Lining

Adding a thermal lining to your curtains or blinds is a great way to save on energy bills as it can retain warmth inside a room during the colder weather. They can also block heat from coming in during the warmer weather. This style of lining is great for keeping your room at a comfortable temperature throughout the seasons. They also have the added benefits of being blackout and noise reducing.

With poorly insulated or single glazing windows, constant heating is required to maintain a warm temperature in the home as heat can easily escape through the gaps and even the seal of good window frames can degrade over time.

With extra layers of microfibre, the thicker lining also adds volume to the curtains; creating a fuller look.

Bonded Interlining

Bonded Interlining is made from bonding standard curtain lining together with a cotton and polyester fleece. It is perfect for giving curtains a thicker look and it is great for energy efficiency, keeping the warmth in and the cold out.

This type of lining combines the benefits of various lining while adding volume to create a luxurious look. When using fabrics on the thinner side for larger windows, it is beneficial to use a thick lining such as bonded interlining to create a high-quality finish to showcase good craftsmanship.
